WWW.NETWORKS upgrades DEWA backbone network to SDH

Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) has a large communication network consisting of both SDH and PDH optical equipment. The core of the network carries critical voice and data signals to all other locations and was based on Nokia PDH operating at 34 Mbps.

DEWA has awarded to WWW.NETWORKS a project to upgrade the existing backbone from PDH to SDH. The scope of work includes the Supply, System Integration, Installation and Commissioning of Marconi OMS 1654 series SDH STM-4/16 equipment at all 10 locations and the reconfiguration and routing of the existing traffic through the new network.

DEWA selection of WWW.NETWORKS as a contractor and Marconi (now Ericsson) as the SDH equipment manufacturer was underpinned by key characteristics of the solution including; product support, equipment upgradeability, expansion capability, equipment reliability and availability.

The number of sub-stations within the DEWA network is in excess of 100 and continues to grow rapidly. All these sub-stations are connected to the Backbone Data Highway which consists of 10 nodes operating in a dual ring configuration.

WWW.NETWORKS has previously completed work for DEWA both directly and via other EPC contractors.

About DEWA

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) was formed on 1 January 1992, to take over and merge the Dubai Electric Company and the Dubai Water Department that had been operating independently.

Today DEWA employs a workforce of about 4,000 employees who look after the needs of the Emirate of Dubai and its ever growing demand for electricity and water.
